On August 6, 2020, when the world was enveloped by the epidemic and the domestic epidemic situation improved slightly, after a long period of preparation, the EdgeGallery project was officially released. As the industry’s first 5G edge computing open source platform, EdgeGallery has focused on 5G edge computing scenarios from the beginning of its release, and is committed to building MEC edge resources, applications, security, and management infrastructure and network open services through open source collaboration. Standards, to achieve interconnection with public clouds, build a unified MEC application ecosystem on the basis of compatible differentiated heterogeneous edge infrastructure, release the potential of 5G, and enable thousands of industries.
The EdgeGallery open source project was initiated by Huawei in April 2020. On July 30, China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, China Mobile, China Unicom, Huawei, Tencent, Zijinshan Lab, Kyushu Cloud and Anheng Information were the eight founding member units. The first community board of directors was jointly held, the community TSC was formed, and the project team, working group and secretariat were determined. The community has since embarked on a path of open governance and operation.
As of August 2021, the community has released a total of five versions, and each version has been continuously improved in terms of code size, number of warehouses, downloads, and the number of contributors; the platform has integrated more than 150 applications and more than 100 open capabilities API; The cumulative number of PRs is nearly 6,000, and more than 30 sets have been deployed in actual projects and PoC scenarios; about 200 people from 48 units and organizations participated in community contributions, and nearly 400 people followed the community. The number of visits to the community’s official website reached more than 400,000. The users following the project are all over the world.
At the same time, the total number of community members has expanded to 31 and won 3 industry awards. Community partners are developing releases based on open source versions. The Edge Native technology architecture concept has also become a key technology for the evolution of the next-generation network in the industry. This is the 5G edge. Calculating part of the progress made by the open source project EdgeGallery in the past year has been a great progress in the field of CT open source in the past, and such changes and developments are happening in the community every day!
The community version naming convention refers to the conventions of international open source projects, and each project has a community version number. The numbering starts with the English letter A, and each version selects a color as the version number of that version.
In December 2020, 4 months after the project was released as open source, EdgeGallery ushered in an important moment. With the joint efforts of all community members, the V1.0 version (Chocolate Release) was officially released, which has also become a key node for community development. As of August, the community has released 5 open source versions with 830,000 lines of code.
The framework of the first version was constructed, forming the four key modules of the project;
The second version of the code is all open, MEP/MECM network isolation, offline deployment and All-in-One mode deployment support, security optimization;
The third version, Chocolate Release, as the key 1.0 version, has been comprehensively improved, and the ease of use of the application development integration platform has been greatly improved. Fuzz, Trojan horses, command injection, DOS attacks, account authorization, brute force cracking, XSS script attacks, CSRF cross-site attacks, network redirect attacks, etc. have been fully optimized for security.
The fourth version, the Dove version, has greatly enhanced AI capabilities and supported cross-platform capabilities. Edge Native architecture and small programs have gradually fallen into the platform;
The latest version E version was released in July, and a total of 29 code warehouses were released. The whole process supports the rapid integration, testing and release of virtual machine applications in the AppStore. The MECM platform supports the distribution and deployment of virtual machine applications, and supports virtual machine specification configuration and network configuration. And environment variable configuration, etc. The openness and AI capabilities have been enhanced again, and the user experience of the system has been optimized again. After the continuous accumulation of several versions, the number of application ecosystems has continued to increase. The EdgeGallery application warehouse has become an application integration just like the “Gallery” in its name. , Display, distribution center.
After the continuous promotion of the community, the concept of edge native has become an important technical reference for the evolution of future network architecture. For the digital transformation of the industry, Edge Native is the target architecture support for the future edge computing network.
Based on Edge Native, the special valuable features of edge computing can be deeply utilized in the edge environment to efficiently build, operate, maintain and manage delay-sensitive edge applications. The representative technologies of Edge Native include the following ten key technologies.
During the development of the project, the community paid close attention to two types of user experience.
The first is the experience of developers and contributors participating in the community, including providing a unified meeting system, mailing list, contribution guide, etc., and also through a series of offline and online courses and activities, so that core contributors can have more in the community Strong sense of belonging.
The second is the end user experience. The project has paid great attention to the improvement of the user interface experience since the 1.0 Chocolate version. A special experience group has been set up to conduct multiple rounds of day reading and brainstorming on the logic and user experience of the system. The spirit of commercial products polishes open source platforms. After several successive versions of improvements, more than 300 issues have been revised and incorporated, the experience of the platform has been significantly improved.
For developers and end users, the community has been working hard to lower the barriers to participation of developers and improve user experience. Including the introduction of detailed project documents, instruction manuals, hands-on experience demos, mini programs, mobile apps, etc., publishing books to promote 5G edge computing; holding technology salons, offline meetups, and joint courses with universities…
The community is well aware of the open source principle of “Community Over Code”, and the development of the project is inseparable from the participation of every developer and contributor in the community. During the year, the community held several developer technology salons in Xi’an, Shanghai, Nanjing, Dongguan, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other places. In each community salon event, there are local member units sponsored or co-organized, which makes the community reachable users and audiences more diversified. Through technical empowerment and discussion, and live demonstrations, more and more The end users of the company feel the latest technological capabilities, and more fellow travelers join the community. At the same time, in the salons and external exchanges again and again, more and more application ecosystems have gathered in the community.
EdgeGallery, which is only open source for the first anniversary, is still working hard. It is precisely because of the community’s clear goals, coupled with open governance and continuous operations, that the community continues to grow in development.
Facing the future, EdgeGallery will continue to improve its own technical capabilities, and fully carry out cross-organizational collaboration with domestic and foreign organizations, such as continuous cooperation with domestic ECC, 5G DNA, 5G AIA, AII and other organizations, and expand in LF Edge.
